Please Note

We will be closed on Bank Holiday Monday, 30th August

Well - it's been quite a month!

From Canada to Corrie

Jackie started June working with a Canadian documentary crew on a show about Coronation Street. "I  got to make-up the shows creator Tony Warren when he came to be interviewed and I thought he was wonderful and gave such a funny inteview.  See my blog for more details of this job."

It was then over to Buxton to start designing The Buxton Festival's productions of The Barber of Bagdad and Luisa Miller.  It was great to work with new faces and old friends.  There was no where near the level of wigage required this year compared to others but it was great to get hands on again.  The roar of the greasepaint, the smell of the crowd....!!   I was also running the crowd scenes on Candy Cabs for make-up designer Jill Sweeney.  We had a wedding, funeral and hen night to organise amongst other things.  Jill was keen to give some students their first chance of filming so she let me pick a lovley team and let me show them the ropes.  Big thanks to Zahra, Louise, Dorota, Sarah, Emma and Kate, you were fab!

Liz's busy

Liz has been doing an amazing job geting to grips with our new till and stock control system.  We are all loving the fact that doing a sale is SO much quicker than before.  She has also been planning out how much stock we need to get in to cover all of the make-up kits we are providing to various colleges for their media make-up students this September.  It's been quite a job and we are looking forward to putting them together as it feels like Christmas!

Vicky's busy

There has been plenty to keep Vic busy as amongst other jobs, she has been preparing wigs for a cruise ship and we are having to make sure, she doesn't jump aboard on the last minute!  There are also plenty of new private clients coming to see us and we are beginning to take orders for drama groups who want to hire wigs for Beauty and the Beast.  Add to this getting ready for our eyelash stall at Manchesters Pride Festival over the bank holiday oh, and the small issue of starting our e-commerce web site.....and some other things which we will keep under wraps for just a little while longer!!!

May 2010

Liz has nearly done it!

Thanks to her sterling work she has inputted all of our products into our fab new computer system and is now merrily slapping barcodes on everything - including Jackie and Vicky if they're not quick enough! It will then be over to Vicky who is going to be in charge of getting the long awaited ecommerce site up and running.

Busy Summer

Jackie has a busy summer ahead organising crowd scenes on a major new series for the BBC. She will be working with Jill Sweeney and her lovely team which include our very own protégé Lucy who has been taken on as a make-up trainee - we are really proud of her!

We are equally as proud of the wonderful Jayne Whittaker who has become our girl Friday. She is a very talented makeup artist who has done some great fashion shoots recently and we love having her on board.

Little ole Wigs Up North! will be having a bit of an image change this summer to reflect how our company is growing. We will be six this June and we want it to be more apparent that we supply make-up too.  There will be a new logo and catalogue comming shortly. We hope you like it!

The challenges still keep coming on the wig making front. We will post photos soon of a multi colured dread lock wig currently under construction, plus some photos and the story of the gorgous Tess with her wigged up teddy called honey bear.

Wigging an army!

We have recently wigged an army, quite literally (22nd Foot re-enactment society) and we are thrilled to see the am dram scene is thriving despite the big bad recession. The show must go on hey?!

Being nosey

There is quite a large and exciting project brewing at wigs central.  If you fancy being let in on the secret, get in-touch via beingnosey@... Call it a bit of Market research amongst make-up artists!

April 2010

New computer system

Fantastic! - we are strangely excited about our new computer system, the technological advances allow us to serve you better as we grow. It took plenty of hard work setting-up but the benefits are huge, allowing us to get on and do what we do best - Wigs and Make-up!

Old Catalogue

As our 2009 Catalogue is now out of date we have removed it as a download. Please bear with us whilst we work on the 2010 issue which we hope to get out as soon as possible, if you have any questions please call us on 0161 236 5483 or use our form.

Thankfully, our lovley clients are keeping us busy and we are really grateful for this.  Last year was tough for alot of people, ourselves included and we feel so lucky to be comming out the other side!
For a long time we have resisted increasing the prices of our wig hire as our aim is to keep them affordable for all, but alas we have had to put them up.  This will be effective from the 1st of May.  We hope you understand!
It is fantastic to see the Am Dram scene kicking off again and we have supplied many shows since the beginning of the year with plenty more still to come. We will also be up at the NODA weekend in Blackpool on Sunday the 2nd of May so pop by and say hello if you are passing.

Courses

There has been alot of interest in our courses and the feedback from those we have done already has been really positive.  New dates and ideas are being added so keep checking or send us an e-mail (or use our form) on anything that interests you and we'll keep you posted.

Liz and Jackie took a trip to Dusseldorf recently to The Make-Up Design Show and got entry into The Beauty Show as well.  They walked their little socks off and found plenty of goodies plus got lots of inspiration so watch this space!

Snowy Redhill Street

Well, I earned my explorer badge for getting in to Manchester as the snow falls.  7 inches of snow fell overnight in the City Centre and it looked like a true winter wonderland but with no gritters in sight (a snow plough would be better), it was chaos out there.  Liz was cut off at home!  As for Vicky, her hardest choice is which beach to pick as she hotfooted it to Oz on a much waited for trip to visit friends and is there til the beginning of February, lucky girl!

Business Award

Wow! We won the New East Manchester All Stars Business award.

It is slowly sinking in now.  The Awards dinner on Thursday was fantastic and in the stunning setting of Gorton Monastry.  We had made our minds up to just have a great evening regardless of the outcome.  But when the gold envelope was opened and it was little ole Wigs Up North, well...!  Liz wants to relive the moment as she can't remember what happened but she does remember leaping up and thinking her Mum's face was a picture. Jackie remembers muffling a scream and we think Vicky was frozen to her chair.  What a blast!
Congratulations to the other finalists for getting through.  It was a tough competition and there was only one point in it, we certainly didn't envy the judges job.  Keep checking back and we will let you know soon how we are investing the prize money, it's going to be great!...More photos

Christmas Celebration Day

This year Wigs Up North was 5 - big thank you to all those who came down. We had a fantistic day, doing make-overs on some lovely clients and then topping the day off with some good food and great girly company.

Radio

Jackie is live on the radio again putting that mouth to good use:  BBC Radio Manchester 'Manchester Business' Monday 6-7pm and again with Heather Stott on Thursday from 9am.

Opera North

After a meeting with Opera North Vicky's looking forward to working alongside wardrobe and wig teams supervising the up-and-coming summer operas 'WERTHER' and 'THE ADVENTURES OF MR BROUCEK'.
Opera North have shopped with us for a while and Vicky has worked with them when they have toured into The Lowry in Salford so it is fantastic to be asked to become involved.

Vicky has been busy on the techno side of the business by running our Facebook page and twitter!.  She is also gearing up to get our e-commerce site up and running. There are some interesting ideas being bandied around for our website so keep popping back.

What do you think of our new website? We are really pleased with it and a big thank you goes to Gordon our designer (a man who can and often does!) He has more ideas in the pipeline to keep you entertained and informed so keep popping back.  Also we would love your feedback so please get in touch.
Later on in the year we will be launching www.themakeupspace.co.uk  to enable our customers to buy our products online. At the moment you can download a copy of our catalogue from the site and we are happy to take orders over the phone.
Our lovely customers have often asked if we would run short courses on a variety of topics.  Well it has taken us a while, but we have listened and have now made a start. Take a look at our courses page for more details.
Jackie's reputation as the gobby one of the business continues!  She appears occasionally as a guest on Heather Stott's Coffee Club for BBC Radio Manchester. The station asked her to become part of a team of local business people who regularly guest present Manchester Business on Monday evenings.  She says: "I am very flattered to be asked - the only thing is I'd better start swotting up!"
